DevDiary: Sid Meier’s Civilization® IV

Posted by Russ Looney
Sid Meier’s Civilization IV Mac is one of the best selling Mac games ever, created by Aspyr and sold here at GameAgent amongst other fine Apple retailers.  In fact, the recent promotion we had that featured Civilization IV and its expansions was so popular, we were taking back orders by the second day!  To follow up, we wanted to ask a member of the Aspyr team, John Butler, about his experiences porting the game over to the Mac platform.  In this exclusive DevDiary, John talks about the challenges of porting a game like Civilization IV over to the Mac, including one bug near the end of development that almost stopped the project cold!  Check out how he dealt with these issues after the jump… (more…)

The iAddict: Mimi

Posted by BlogLady
With the official release of the iPhone 4, we at GameAgent thought it would be appropriate to launch a new feature on the NonBlog that we’re calling “The iAddict.”  With each new major software or hardware release from Apple, Inc, we will post a story from friends, co-workers, fans, customers, supporters, and kinda whoever we can talk into it about their Apple love. To start things off, I have asked the biggest Apple fan I know to create the first post in this new series–my mom. While growing up I didn’t realize that our first Apple IIGS would be an entry into an addiction.  As kids, we just liked making those awesome banners and greeting cards with Print Shop on the tractor-Feed paper.  Our first forage into gaming was with Reader Rabbit, Family Feud, and a World Sports game where you tried to balance on logs, jump off cliffs and do other “international” sports.  Little did we know this was just the tip of the iceberg.  Our first laptop was a PowerBook 150, I played SimCity 2000 and had my first experience talking to some one ON THE COMPUTER (I’m talking internet, folks) on our Macintosh LC, and was sent to college with a hand-me-down Mac of some sort.   My mom is inspired by technology and uses it in ways that educate, connect and inspire.  Her jobs have always connected education and technology and Apple has always been her manufacturer of choice.  Here’s the story of her addiction…. Love, BlogLady My friends and family are actively searching for that multi-step program that will save me. I lamely claim my addiction began due to a phrase that echoed through my youth, “an Apple a day keeps the doctor away.”  My name is Katherine, and I am addicted to Apple. (more…)

Classic Reviews: Sid Meier’s Civilization® IV: Colonization from MacGamer.com (5/24/2010)

Posted by Russ Looney
Sid Meier’s Civilization® IV: Colonization for the Mac is a follow-up to the incredibly addictive Sid Meier’s Civilization® IV published by Aspyr Media.  Like its predecessor, Colonization combines Civilization’s addictive “just one more turn” gameplay with all-new graphics and features that add more depth to the franchise.  MacGamer.com does an excellent job of detailing the various features of Civilization: Colonization as well as breaking down what works and what doesn’t.  Check out part of the review below, then follow the link to get to the full breakdown.

By MacGamer.com

Civilization’s new chapter
Civilization IV: Colonization brings a new twist to the civilization building genre of games.  Previous Civilization titles had you starting your game in 6000 B.C. having not even discovered the wheel yet.  In Colonization you get to start quite a bit later than that.  It is the age of exploration and you’ve been sent out by the king or queen of your homeland to build a colony, and send the riches of the new world home to your countrymen.

User Submitted Review – Starcraft Mac

Posted by Russ Looney

By PianO

What makes a game great?  Is it the graphics?  The sound?  The replayability factor?  Awesome single player campaigns?  Even greater multiplayer functionality? Starcraft, of Blizzard Entertainment, has all this, and more.  Oftentimes, real-time strategy games are marred by boring replayability factors due to two-sided evenness, which tends to lead to the same game, over and over again.  Starcraft presents a unique take by offering a quintessential balance between three different races vying for strategic control in space: the adaptive Terran, the feral Zerg, and the stolid Protoss.  Each race offers different units, and therefore different capabilities and strategies – each side can utilize counter strategies that are unique to each race and most importantly, fun to play!  While the game itself was introduced in 1998, and a crucial expansion in Brood War was introduced later on, the game itself has proved to be a crucial revolutionizing point.  The game has sold more than 9.5 million copies up to date, and has also been played out in professional Starcraft competitions throughout the world, most notably in South Korea, with the advent of Starleagues.
