As you’ve all heard by now, RAGE: Campaign Edition has been released on Macs worldwide.  It’s a really awesome game with a ton of great content, but there are probably still some questions you have about the game before you’re willing to take the plunge into the Wasteland.  That’s where we come in!  We spoke with some of the top brass at Aspyr Media to come up with the FAQ below.  Have any questions that aren’t addressed?  Let us know in the comments!

RAGE: Campaign Edition Mac FAQs

RAGE: Campaign Edition includes the “Wasteland Sewer Missions” and the “Anarchy Edition” content are available in-game and do not require a code to unlock.   Does RAGE: Campaign Edition Mac support Multiplayer games? RAGE: Campaign Edition on Mac contains the fully featured single-player campaign and does not include any Multiplayer features.   Where can I buy RAGE: Campaign Edition Mac?  RAGE: Campaign Edition is available worldwide from Apple’s Mac App Store, through Aspyr’s own GameAgent.com digital store, and from other digital Mac game and Mac software retailers.   Can I buy a physical disc copy of RAGE: Campaign Edition Mac?  RAGE: Campaign Edition is currently only available as a digital download, though a physical retail copy is in the works.   What languages are supported in RAGE: Campaign Edition Mac? RAGE: Campaign Edition Mac is supported in English, French and German   Does RAGE: Campaign Edition Mac use SteamWorks, SteamPlay, and is it available for sale on Steam?  RAGE: Campaign Edition does not use SteamWorks for DRM or achievements, is not for sale on Steam, and does not support SteamPlay.   Why is there no multiplayer or support for SteamWorks and SteamPlay?  Because of the business model and licensing requirements of SteamPlay and SteamWorks, Aspyr is unable to support either for RAGE Mac at this time.  A Steam account and the Steam client are required for multiplayer, and Apple’s Mac App Store does not allow for technology such as SteamWorks in their store.   Does RAGE: Campaign Edition Mac use DRM (Digital Rights Management)? Yes. If purchased through the Mac App Store, RAGE: Campaign Edition uses Apple’s AppStore DRM. If purchased elsewhere, such as the GameAgent Store, the game uses Software Passport Mac.   I already purchased RAGE for Windows. Can I use my CD key to get RAGE: Campaign Edition Mac for free? A CD key for the Windows version of RAGE will not work with RAGE: Campaign Edition on Mac. I am confused. Rage is unable to have SteamWorks but Civiliaztion V contains SteamWorks. Why is it different for Rage?

    • http://blog.gameagent.com Russ Looney

RAGE is just a different game than Civ V, and, as noted, the business model and licensing requirements for SteamPlay and SteamWorks were just prohibitive this time around. You may yet see a Mac version of RAGE on Steam one of these days, but likely not any time soon.

I’m a Mac user…can I use other gamepads on Rage?

    • http://blog.gameagent.com/ Russ Looney

No, only the Xbox 360 wired USB and Games for Windows 360 wired controller will work with RAGE: Campaign Edition as of now.

      • Fonz024 Rigor

how can I make it work?

      • Mac

Is there an additional driver required or similar? I’m running with the Xbox 360 wired USB controller on a MacBook 2011 and have Enabled Gamepad in the game settings, but the controller has no effect in the menus of the game.

        • Mac

Menus ‘of’ the game should, of course, read menus ‘or’ the game.

        • http://blog.gameagent.com/ Russ Looney

According to our support team, it may help to get rid of any 3rd party drivers for the controller. If you’re still having trouble getting the controller to work, please open a ticket with support (support@aspyr.com or http://support.aspyr.com).

Thanks Russ; I should have noted that I resolved the problem by unloading the tattiebogle Xbox 360 controller driver while playing RAGE. I then reload it for anything that needs it. Details are posted in Aspyr’s RAGE: Frequently Asked Questions

Awesome! Thanks for updating the situation on the blog.

if i have the new 2011 macbook air 13 inch mac with a 1.8 GHz can i play this game

    • http://blog.gameagent.com/ Russ Looney

I would guess the game will not run well. As noted above, we recommend a minimum 2.4 GHz CPU speed. If you wish, you can open a ticket with the Aspyr support team and send them your full system specs to get a better idea of whether the game will run. Contact info is above.

      • Cjmaldon12

but if i run the game would it damage my computer in any way

Who exactly made Mac port of Rage? Timothee Besset was involved with this Mac port of Rage?

    • http://blog.gameagent.com/ Russ Looney

Aspyr Media ported RAGE to the Mac. Other than that, though, I can’t comment who from id may have worked on the title before we took over.

  • Gbudny

@Russ Looney,Can you show me credits for Mac version of Rage?

Thanks for bringing more quality games on Mac! But what saddens me is no Steam support, though it’s completely understandable that Aspyr probably wouldn’t get any money off Steam sales if I’m correct? It’s just that this sort of sounds like Aspyr will no longer make Mac games that support Steam. I hope it’s not true but I guess this was coming.

    • http://blog.gameagent.com/ Russ Looney

Unfortunately, Steam support was just not an option this time around (or at least not currently), but that doesn’t mean we won’t be supporting Steam for any future games. We look at it on a project-by-project basis.

As for Steam sales, particularly in the case of a SteamPlay-enabled game, compensation depends on whether or not the buyer plays on a Mac or PC more in the days following purchase. Aspyr only gets compensated if Mac is the preferred platform.

RAGE on PC has optional CUDA acceleration for texture transcoding. During RAGE development id was also investigating the use of OpenCL for this purpose although it didn’t seem to make it to the final version. Does the Mac version offer OpenCL hardware accelerated texture transcoding? At the very least, has hardware CUDA acceleration for nVidia GPUs been maintained from the PC version?

Also does the Mac version already include the 1.2 patch recently released for PC?

    • http://blog.gameagent.com/ Russ Looney

I’m afraid the answer is no on all counts. Can’t comment much on the OpenCL/CUDA stuff, but I can assure you we’re working on porting the RAGE Mac patch.

Been playing Rage for a couple of weeks.  Upgraded from Max OS X 7.2 to 7.3 and now my progress saves will not load.

Where are the save files placed for Mac OS X Rage?  I cannot locate them in the package contents, in my Userdocuments folder, in the LibraryApplication Support folder, or any other logical location I can think of.

Game works fine when I start a new campaign, but I am concerned either privileges were lost for the save files in the OS upgrade or (gulp) the save files got scrubbed.

Please submit a ticket with our support staff support@aspyr.com regarding your save game issues.  Thank you.
