Call of Duty: Black Ops Mac Launch Date and Details Released

Posted by Russ Looney

Call of Duty Black Ops MacRejoice gamers! Today Aspyr released the final details on one of the most anticipated Mac game releases this year, Call of Duty: Black Ops! We’re less than a week away from suiting up and experiencing one of the best shooter experience s possible.

Black Ops is set to release digitally on September 27, 2012, and will be available via Steam, the GameAgent Store, and other online digital retailers.  A Mac App Store release will follow shortly after.  Bear in mind that while it will be available to purchase from Steam, the game will NOT be a SteamPlay title.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Mac will retail for $49.99 and will include the First Strike Content Pack at no extra cost.  The First Strike content pack includes 4 new multiplayer maps as well as an exciting zombie experience, complete with its own multiplayer map.  Pre-orders are available at the GameAgent Store and will save players 10% in the process!

For those craving even more undead action, the Rezurrection Content Pack will also be available for purchase at launch for $14.99.  This content pack will be available through the same retail outlets as the game and as an in-app purchase for those that buy the game from the Mac App Store.  The other two Black Ops Content Packs, Escalation and Annihilation, will be available on the Mac later this year as a bundle.

Multiplayer will be Mac-to-Mac only, but will be open to the entire Mac gaming community, meaning purchasing the game from Steam won’t cut off players from those that purchased from the Mac App Store, and vice versa.  To help grease those multiplayer wheels, Aspyr has set up a public Facebook group, Black Ops Mac, which will enable players to communicate and set up matches between themselves.

This is just the tip of Black Ops iceberg, friends. We’ll be posting a follow-up FAQ shortly that recaps some of the above info as well as additional details on the game, including multiplayer support and system requirements.  There’s even a Black Ops multiplayer strategy guide in the works so you can get the leg up on your friends in multiplayer right off the bat, so stay tuned!

I understand that this is a new game as far as the Mac is concerned, but $50 for a game which is almost 2 years old? And would have been played by almost anyone with a console.

I would like to support games on the Mac, but $50 for an old game is just a bit too much. I’ll pay $50-$60 if the game is not older than 6 months and the mac release is announced and the game has great reviews. Around $30? There is a chance I will buy it. $25 or so? I’ll buy it just to support Mac game development.

Here is an idea. Borderlands 2 is close to release. If you release a mac version within 6 months, I will buy it for whatever price the windows version released at.

With the Mac version you get a $15 DLC included with it for $49.99. The PC version is $39.99 in most places, so that puts the PC game + DLC at $55, making the Mac version more bang for your buck!

If your not using Steamplay or Steamworks why is it on Steam?

    • http://blog.gameagent.com/ Russ Looney

Call of Duty: Black Ops does utilize Steamworks for certification, achievements, etc. It’s just not Steamplay-supported, meaning purchasing the PC version will not allow you to download the Mac version free of charge.

      • Mr Boogeyman

What SteamWorks features will be included on the Steam version. What about matchmaking and why only Mac to Mac, when Steam supports crossplatform? Also since when does Valve allow Mac only games on Steam?

        • http://blog.gameagent.com/ Russ Looney

It seems I may have overstated the “etc” part. Right now it’s only used for certification and achievements. Some features were disabled to enable multiplayer between Steam and Mac App. It’s Mac-Mac only due to technical limitations. And this will be the first Mac game on Steam to not feature Steam Play.

          • Mr Boogeyman

I like the idea of having Mulitplayer between Steam and the MAS, I also like the idea of Mac Only games on Steam. I just wish it used all of Steams features and of course PC-Mac Mulitplayer.

Mac to Mac only? Why? COD4 is Mac to PC friendly. Shouldn’t these things be improving with time? I like the fact that your porting Black Ops to Mac, it’s great news, but no cross platform means I can’t play with my COD4 PC friends…

  • Peter

Well, sadly I just noticed that it requires Mac OS X 10.7.4…. Why? Snow Leopard is still the best Mac os. Many not-well-known professional applications are not stable yet on Lion.

Do we now need a computer dedicated to gaming because Apple releases a yearly update (containing mostly new versions of Mail and iTunes)? At the price of a Mac we could at least expect long-term compatibility of port, specially considering that 10.6 wasn’t even released at the time Black ops came out. Can you expect this to sell as well as COD4 with all these limitations? Anyway, good luck.

This whining about price and trying to tell developers how they should have made a game is getting tiresome. These things take time to port. People have to do the work and you have to pay them. New games require and investment of time based on prior profits.

Some are complaining because they do have Aspyr at heart and want them to succeed. Having the game not working on Snow Leopard will limit their sales, having no cross-platform support will also limit their sales. Hardware requirements are easily understandable, but os requirements on Mac are virtual and only a matter of coding.

I would buy it even without the cross-platform support, but I won’t install Lion on my computer (to play a 2010 game) therefore I can’t buy Black ops and encourage a company I respect. When it comes to creative production Lion is a buggy broken product and many hardware drivers aren’t even stable yet for Mountain Lion. Requiring the Mac community to have 2 computers, one for gaming and one for work, is not good business.

sucks i just tried to get a refund on MGS for my COD BO (i don’t want lion and made this purchase without reading system reqs) and now I can only get an in-store credit, last game I buy digital download online for sure, except for the game i am forced to spend my credit on. Poor show. I know it is partly my fault but that is where a good company would help out and just refund me. : (

        • Mr Sadmad

Ok I have calmed down a little now and I know it was stupid of me not to have checked the spec fully. I am at least grateful to MGS for replying overnight and letting me have an in-store credit no questions asked (although if it was an EA title they would not even have issued this, so beware!). I do however still have a grumble about games manufactures generally… This is regarding the increasing occurrence of them insisting that games are stored on the computer’s boot drive. I have spent hours and good money to get all my software onto my external 1TB drive (with everything backed up on my 2TB external spare drive). This is in order to keep my MBP SSD free of clutter. Itunes realise this and allow you to store library externally so why can’t we have our games stored externally also. This definitely WILL dictate the software I purchase in the future. This is something game specs won’t tell you in advance btw. It puts me off even considering buying a game.

          • Mr Sadmad

Update….using the MGS download manager I can now store all my games on my external drive or delete then re-download on any machine so this is great news.

Hey i’m just wondering if i buy the app store version will i be able to synch it up with Steam

    • http://blog.gameagent.com/ Russ Looney

You will be able to play online with Steam users, but it will not be added to your Steam library.

      • Blazeeee

Alright thank you and also what are we using then instead of steam if bought from the app store

        • http://blog.gameagent.com/ Russ Looney

Game Center will track achievements if you purchase from the Mac App Store and have updated to OS X 10.8.

If I buy this game through GameAgent, how does it download? How do I get any updates that are pushed out? How do I get additional DLC? … Also how long until the Mac App Store gets it? I would prefer the Mac App Store so I can get seamless updates and in-app purchases for DLC. Also, I asked this to Aspyr but can you load mods on the Mac version as well?

    • http://blog.gameagent.com/ Russ Looney

Purchasing through GameAgent Store will provide a download code which you can redeem via Steam. You will then download the game, get updates, DLC, etc, through Steam as well (though we will also sell DLC codes via the GameAgent Store).

We’re waiting on approval from Apple to release in the Mac App Store, so there’s still a chance it could be available on the same day as Steam. If not, it shouldn’t be more than 1-2 weeks.
