This is brought to you by Ric Molina (@MacGamerRic), a self-proclaimed Mac fan and “hardcore” gamer. He runs MacGamerHQ, the online place for all the biggest news, previews and reviews about Mac games.

More and more First Person Shooters are coming to the Mac. You can now choose among Rage, Portal 2, Borderlands and starting this week, Borderlands 2 , just to name a few. Yet, the series that defined what a modern First Person Shooter should be is Call of Duty. Aspyr brought Mac gamers everywhere much joy by bringing Black Ops to the Mac!
Enter Call of Duty: Black Ops
Call of Duty: Black Ops was originally released on consoles and the PC 2 years ago. The most recent Call of Duty game available for the Mac was Modern Warfare, until Aspyr decided it was time to bring a new Call of Duty game to the Mac platform. Black Ops for Mac was released the 27th September 2012 and you can get it at GameAgent for $49.99. (more…)

Ever since the advent of video games there have been games about superheroes. Short of your own imagination after reading comic books, where else could someone put themselves into the fantastical shoes of these caped crusaders and fight crime? Unfortunately the limitations of the medium have made for some severely gimped superhero games that can’t hope to do the amazing feats of these characters justice.
Few heroes have as many games bearing his name than the Dark Knight himself, Batman. With release of The Dark Knight Rises this Friday, it seemed like a good time to reflect on the best and worst Bat-titles the gaming world has seen up until this point.
Today we bring you the dregs of his gaming appearances—games so lame they don’t even deserve the mantle of the bat.

For this
Classic Review, we’re looking over at our friends from one of
the premiere Mac gaming sites,
Inside Mac Games. Franklin Pride reviews
Civilization V, and, not to give anything away, but we think he likes it.
So, for all the Civilization fans out there, should you buy this? Heck yeah! The core gameplay remains the same, combat is more interesting than ever before, culture provides a large number of major new options, and it’s easily the best Civilization release to date.
You can check out the
full review over at the Inside Mac Games website.

I, like many other FPS veterans, have been long awaiting the release of Brink. Following many of the trailers for Brink, I felt as if it was going to be an FPS that finally had conquered the idea of free movement in an environment. This concept would add significantly more depth to the FPS genre and would really be the first game of its kind. After several hours of playing the game, I’m happy to report that, for the most part, the game works really well.
Though I’d rather start off by mentioning what doesn’t work at all: single player, and multiplayer games with bots. Brink’s AI is pretty depressing and doesn’t do well to represent what playing against real people is like. I could feasibly see someone playing the game in single player mode, and basically quitting/giving up on the game before attempting much more, as it is that bad. Honestly, though, Brink is a team oriented game and meant to be played online, with people. That’s the way it was created to function correctly and that is the reality of where the best gaming experience is. In short, if you’re not into online gaming, it’s really not going to be a game for you. Otherwise, I believe it to be a rewarding experience. I also think the only proper place to play this game is on the PC, as I would imagine the game to be incredibly cumbersome with a console controller (like most other FPS games tend to be).

In this Classic Review post, we’re touching base with the guys over at
MacGenius who reviewed
Civilization V earlier this year. In addition to the game’s overhauled battle system, they particularly loved the near-infinite replayability of the game:
And hell yes, this is the type of game that you want to just play over and over. Like its predecessors, Civilization V is amazingly addictive, with games commonly drawing more than five or six hours out of me in a single sitting. The reason? Because win or lose, Civilization V allows players to guide an entire society and craft their own story, taking them from the dawn of history and far into the future.
Check out what else they thought about the game over at the
MacGenius website. Additionally, you can read more about Civilization V Mac
here.

Seamus Bellamy of
Mac|Life takes Civilization V for a spin in this review from December of 2010. What did he think? Here’s an excerpt:
Boasting a refined combat system, rich 3D graphics, and a streamlined micromanagement system, Civilization V is worthy of the franchise’s crown as the king of all strategy games. Aspyr, the developer that also ported the last Civilization game to the Mac, did a tremendous job maintaining Civ V’s look, feel, and playability.

It’s a beautiful day to strike a blow for the Rebellion. I’m standing on the shore of an island on a planet called
Fresia, home of Incom Industries. You may not have heard of the company, but you’re likely very familiar with
the spaceships they produce, a line that includes the venerable X-Wing fighter.
Right now, however, the X-Wing exists only as four prototypes, and the Empire plans to seize them when they nationalize the planet within days. Hoping to keep the ships out of the bad guys’ hands, some of Incom’s scientists who are loyal to the Rebellion have told Captain Raymus Antilles where to find the prototypes. As Empire at War producer Michael Fetterman and I watch, pod-shaped Rebellion landing craft descend through a cloudless blue sky to drop off troops and T2-B tanks.
“The years before ‘A New Hope’ takes place are some of the most interesting for us as game developers,” Fetterman explains. “This is the same time frame of Star Wars that we all fell in love with when the original movies were released, so it was a great opportunity to work with something we all know and love.”
