This patch includes all available patch and hotfix code available as of 1/20/11.

Why can’t I play PC to Mac?

Aspyr and Firaxis have been working on supporting PC -> Mac multiplayer since project start.  At this time cross-platform compatibility remains too unstable for release.  We continue to work on this issue.

Can I save to the cloud between PC and Mac?

Games cannot be saved between PC and Mac versions.

Will you put DLC in a box or on a disk for retail release?

We currently do not have plans to put available DLC on a stand-alone retail disk.  We encourage people to sign up for our newsletter or follow Civilization V Mac on Twitter for the latest information on Sid Meier’s Civilization V Mac.

Full Civilization V Mac Patch Notes (1.0.1.166)

  • Resolutions higher than 2048×1440 have been enabled and the “grey bar” issues that appear at super high resolutions have been resolved.

AI

TACTICAL AI

  • Proper evaluation of which enemy units can reach my units next turn.
  • Sorting enemy targets (within a class) by damage.
  • Combine bombardment fire from cities with other ranged fire where possible.
  • Never target a city for a ranged attack when they are already at (or going to be at) 1 health.
  • Have the tactical AI be more aggressive about fortifying units that aren’t moving anyways.
  • Make all forms of guarding improvements the lowest priority tactical AI moves.
  • Don’t mark tiles adjacent to enemy at sea as good for flank attacks — there is no flanking at sea.
  • Update to tactical AI pillaging code – now prioritize enemy land resources and trade routes (never regular mines or farms). Always uses the check to make sure AI is not trying to pillage in an enemy dominance zone. Barbarians will still target everything.
  • Never use ranged units to provide flank bonuses.
  • Reduce chance of AI civs making “suicide” attacks.
  • Changes to better protect the capital or any city with an enemy within 5 tiles.

  • AI will be more likely to build and bring siege units in a city attack.
  • Better nuke targeting by AI.

EXPLORATION/EXPANSION

  • AI will emphasize getting an Ocean going explorer unit when the time comes.
  • AI slightly more likely to settle off home continent.
  • AI should colonize other continents regularly.
  • AI second wave expansion more aggressive.
  • Improve the AI’s chances of setting up protected bombard attacks.

  • AI don’t send a barb expedition if defenses are critical.
  • AI less likely to pick a city on an inland sea for serious naval production.

MISC

  • Fix small bugs with adding long roads around existing features.
  • Fixed bombard arrow across world wrap.

CRASHES

  • Movement limit crash fix (occurred when any high-movement unit, a gunship in this case, made use of the railroad bonus and moved beyond the engine visualization limits)
  • Crash fix for diplo AI. When the player witnesses an AI leader buy a minor ally, and aggressively purchased them back, the game would eventually crash when the AI leader would correctly try to complain to you about it.
  • The following crashes were all discovered via the Steam Crash Reporting system that Civilization V utilizes:
  • Crash – pCitizens->GetCityPlotFromIndex(iPlotLoop); is returning NULL in the CvPlayer::DoRevolt loop.
  • Crash – Occasionally strange values are sent to the movement cursor code. Wrap and clamp the values before they get to the pathfinder.
  • Crash – Fix to divide by zero crash with AI buying plots.
  • Crash – In RouteValid, the CvTacticalAnalysisMap cell thinks a plot is claimed, but the plot itself has no owner.
  • Crash – Era out of bounds during a reload.
  • Crash – During a resync, a crash happens when GameplayUnitCreated calls CvPlot::GetActiveFogOfWarMode apparently because the game’s ActiveTeam is NO_TEAM (-1).

SERIALIZATION/SAVES

  • Fixed save format which causes saves to increase the memory footprint of the game drastically when loading frequently over the course of the game. This heightened the risk of late-game memory crashes significantly.
  • Jim

    Ok, two thoughts:
    1) Thanks for the hard work and for getting a patch out. I look forward to trying some of the DLC.
    2) The cross-platform multiplayer wait is getting a bit old. The PC multiplayer already needs help – you should be able to, say, have your multiplayer save games named after something of your choice, or the game name you entered as Host, or the date you started, or something, anything other than just turn # + year so it overwrites previous games – but it still seems odd that Mac can’t match PC’s meager offering in that arena yet.

  • http://www.tourtouras.info Thanos

Great news! I am rejoiced to see the continuous work of Aspyr towards supporting the Mac platform. I must admit that I wasn’t expecting an on-par update so soon, thanx Aspyr.

Now that we’re on par with the Windows version of the game, maybe it’s time to optimize the game engine a little bit, since it does get a bit sluggish in the modern era.

Keep up the good work people, scrolling up to dive into the release notes.

  • ltcommander.data

Yes it took a while, but this major release with the latest patch and all DLC available together is well worth the wait. Hopefully cross-platform multiplayer is coming soon.

And Civ V’s Steam description page needs updating since it still has a note that Babylon is not included in the Mac Deluxe Edition.

  • http://www.gameagent.com BlogLady

@ Jim. We continue to work hard at the PC-> Mac multiplayer issue and have made considerable progress but in testing we saw some PC-> Mac crashes in multiplayer which is why we have decided not to include this feature in this patch. Tough part with Civ V is gameplay testing takes a WHILE, so while one or two crashes may not be indicative of what will happen for most people we have to spend considerable time figuring that out.

@ ltcommander. The movie and music is still not available as part of the Digital Deluxe version on the Mac, but Babylon is there! We’ll work with Steam to make sure the messaging is clearer.

  • Jim

Oh those poor people who must play nonstop Civ and get paid for it, and probably have 3 meals a day delivered to desks. I feel for them. ;-)

For what it’s worth, PC -> PC multiplayer is not without crashes as well, so it could be that you’re simply experiencing the norm that the core game has to offer at the moment.

  • Zack

Honestly, the only reason I bought this game was to play with my significant other who has the pc version. I would rather deal with occasional crashes (as lOng as the game autosaves like it does in pciltiplayer). I would also like to reiterate what was stated in the comment above, the pc multiplayer crashes continuously. Maybe it is a problem for both versions? If so, I would still prefer multiplayer.

  • http://www.gameagent.com BlogLady

@ Jim. That is hilarious. I’ll have to ask them how rough their job is ;)

@ Zack. We will keep you guys posted on if there is an opportunity to release as-is. Keep in mind that if there is new DLC + patch released on the PC side in the future we’ll be back to out-of-sync, but we anticipate that future support of DLC and patching to have a much shorter release schedule on the Mac.

  • Alexander

Seeing the actual changes and considering myself a hardcore fan I do not look forward to the majority of the changes. Everything gets more complicated, more difficult, more challenging, less simple. The actual changes are seriously anti- gamer and will make game- life more difficult. You sure you want that? I believe I know what the changes will give me – more headaches.
For the record, I play the high levels and it gets hard enough on some maps already, I do not need the AI getting super- smart (the AI was dumb beyond measure so far, I give you all that), just smart… and the ‘adjustments’ will hurt me.
    Not nice, seriously not nice.
(and PC-Mac multiplayer has to seriously come soon or I will ‘denounce’ Civ5 publicly)

  • Angry Person

This is bull honkey. PC to MAC multiplayer has taken forever. What a waste of my money if I can’t even play with my friends on something that was supposedly going to support this. How long has this game been out now? That’s just ridiculous. Next time you sell a game make sure you advertise that I’ll only get 75% of the game, and have to wait 6 months before I get my money’s worth. You are crooks.

  • BladeRnr

I was under the impression that the DLC would not be release under SteamPlay, so, if it wasn’t just me being mistaken and you did change your mind, thank you, that’s very cool.

Although I do have one question: since I bought everything on the PC so far (before the Mac version was announced/released), I’d like to support Aspyr for the work you did on the port. So if I buy the DLC from the Mac Steam Client, will you get a cut of the profits? Or that still all goes straight to 2K?

    • http://www.gameagent.com Russ Looney

@BladeRnr: It’s actually kind of a tricky question. Strictly on a purchasing level, the only way we’re guaranteed any compensation is if you purchase the game or any of the DLC via GameAgent.com. If you purchase the game or DLC via Steam, it’s then dependent on which version you play the most in the following couple of weeks (PC or Mac). What’s important is that you primarily play the Mac version(s), at least for the first couple of weeks that you have the DLC.

  • Xill

You guys are doing an amazing job.
    Thanks for the patch.

You should fix the Multiplayer for Firaxis because they do not seam to care about it.

  • Dis Appointing

I have to repeat what has been mentioned before. It´s a shame to sell a game that is lacking one of its key features: multiplayer with PC. We have been waiting since christmas for a patch that will fix this problem!

  • BladeRnr

@Russ Looney: That’s a very strange system they have there. Thanks for the reply, I’ll go delete my Bootcamp version now! =)

PS. I hope you guys will continue to support Steam nonetheless in the future, it’s a very cool platform.

    • http://www.gameagent.com Russ Looney

@BladeRnr: Make no mistake, we absolutely love Steam and what it’s been able to do for Mac gaming, and we look forward to further supporting Steam with our games in the future. Situations like ours are usually only an issue when a game’s Mac-owning fanbase is simply too excited to wait for a Mac version (and really, who can blame them?).

  • Major General

I continue to have issues where I will go to a screen — say to see Elizabeth and the mouse pointer will not click any buttons and I am stuck. Since I am running full screen mode I have to shut off my Mac (!!!) and start over.

I see this bug usually after playing a game leaving the session and then coming back later to play again. After a clean reboot the program seems fine.

I am running a Mac Pro w/6GB of RAM and 10.6.7

Should note that I am using a custom cursor size (one notch above normal)

Hope it helps.. great game.. wish it ran faster though. I am on a Xenon 3.0 Ghz quad-core machine with a Nvidia 8800GT card.

  • Fej B

Question – When does the World Builder for Mac come out? Soon, right? :-)

    • Believedandreceived

I hope soon as well….please Aspyr…was the best part of civ 4, and would only be better with civ 5.

  • JUDY MARTINEZ

    Hi there
since the update to 1.0.166 the game keeps crashing. I have a macpro 5.1 – 10.6.6. – procesor 2.864 quad core intel xion – the latest mac in fact so it’s not normal it keeps crashing – it was perfect before. Can you tell me what to do please? if worst comes to worst how do we uninstall and reinstall? thanks for your help
    Judy Martinez

    • http://www.gameagent.com Russ Looney

@ Major General and JUDY MARTINEZ: We want to direct you guys to our awesome support team. They should be able to diagnose any problems and help in fixing them. You can reach them via support@aspyr.com, the web, or even Twitter. Just tell them the exact same thing you’ve written here.

  • JUDY MARTINEZ

Thanks Russ I sent them a message and they say they’ll reply within 72 hours. Has anyone else complained with same issue?

    • http://www.gameagent.com Russ Looney

@JUDY: Great! And though I can’t necessarily speak for them myself, they usually get back in a MUCH shorter window of time.

As far as anyone else bringing up similar complaints, I haven’t seen anything; but then again, I keep most of my attention here on the NonBlog and our social media outlets.

  • Paul

After latest patch my game crashes every time I meet a AI player no matter when it occurs turn 5 or turn 100… I emailed aspry from link above and i am waiting to hear back… Just so you know there are more of us out there with the same problem… Worked great before the patch even when others were having problems…. Now i am sad

  • JUDY MARTINEZ

    Hi Paul
good to know we’re not alone. I too have sent an email to Aspry and hope they reply before 72 hours are up? In fact I’m writing for my husband who plays alone – so I don’t know what an AI player is. And he has no idea how to get rid of the patch – we tried uninstall but it didn’t work. Anyway good luck
    Judy

  • Paul

AI is a computer player… “Artificial Intelligence”

  • Blake

I’m also patiently waiting for the MAC and PC versions to sync up so cross-platform multiplayer is possible. I was so excited when I saw there was a new patch out but was disappointed when we tried to fire up the two computers and found they are still off. I know you folks are working hard on this, but I’m very anxious to have the two games on the same version. Thanks, and keep up the hard work! :)

  • Paul

so this is how I think I may have fixed the crashing problem… I
    1) uninstalled Civ V through Steam
    2) uninstalled Steam
    3) Went up to spot light and searched and deleted all steam files / folders
    4) Went up to spotlight and searched and deleted all Sid Meier’s files / folders
    5) Restarted Mac
    6) Ran Disk Utility and selected the Mac hard drive and clicked Repair Disk Permissions
    7) Reinstalled Steam client
    8) made sure Steam client fully updated
    9) right clicked on Civ V under library selected preferences told it to not to Auto Update Civ V
    10) clicked install Civ V under library heading
    11) 45min later game installed clicked play no freezing problems so far keeping my fingers crossed but I played a duel and won with alexander before 350BC so it seems to work now.

  • Paul

Well it lasted 2 play throughs and now is crashing again just like before…. Guess will have to wait for an official fix…. gonna just quit playing for a week or so and hope when i come back they have a fix for the problem

  • JUDY MARTINEZ

    Hi Paul
thanks for sharing your information. It is greatly appreciated. I met a brick wall at Aspyr and I am really disappointed. We have the latest MacPro – an enormous investment and they tell us they don’t support the HD ATI Radeon 5770 just the one before the 5750 – This doesn’t make sense – are we supposed to downgrade? Will they eventually support it – I don’t know what to do – considering it worked fine prepatch IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE. We will try your method and if not like you wait for new patch!!
    thanks again
    Judy

  • http://www.tourtouras.info Thanos

I still find supporting certain GPUs and NOT OpenGL in general a bit awkward! That’s why I STILL believe that the Mac port of Civ V is based on some kind of wine-translator that in fact interprets ActiveX code. If Civ 5 on Mac was using plain OpenGL, I don’t believe there would be an issue where a newer GPU would crash the game.

My 5c. Don’t have any issues on an iMac, though.

  • Paul

This is the response I received from Aspyr:
Thank you for supplying us with the requested save. We were not able to produce
    crashing from another 60+ turns.

According to the information provided, you are using a dual video card setup
with one supported (330M) and one unsupported (Intel GMA) chipset. The new
MacBook Pro automatically switches the active card depending on what
applications you are running on it. We recommend that you do not have any
Applications running in the background when playing. Also, please delete the
com.aspyr.civ5.plist file from User/Library/Preferences then launch the game.

  • YOU SUCK

I bought starcraft, and I was immediately able to play cross-platform, PC-MAC online. Maybe one day you’ll become an actual company like Blizzard. Get yo’ stuff together and release a FULL game. You should be reported to the better business bureau for being a piece of junk company that releases half games. Who do I contact about getting $20 back? Since I only received 3/5 of the game when I bought it, I’d like to be reimbursed for the other 2/5 that you have yet to release.

  • Xill

    Re: “YOU SUCK”
Firaxis made the game, not Aspyr. Your at the wrong place complaining here, you have to go at the 2k Games forum. Aspyr are only responsible for the port and so far it’s on par with the PC version, just a tad behind in versions.

Anyway, let’s just hope Firaxis fix the Multiplayer once and for all and that Aspyr ports the MP patch asap.

  • YOU SUCK (Xill)

    Re: Xill Re: “YOU SUCK”
You are dumb. If Aspyr is a “tad bit behind in versions,” then they are not on par with the PC version. If they were on par with the PC, then both MAC and PC would be at the same version.

Secondly, you’re speaking about a separate issue. Yes there are multiplayer issues that Firaxis must fix. But the crux of not being able to have cross-platform play is that the MAC and PC aren’t on the same versions. If they were on the same version, PC to MAC multiplayer would be possible. Yes, the multiplayer would still have issues that Firaxis would need to fix (and Aspyr would later need to port), and they would exist on both the MAC and PC, but at least you could still play and bear the issues as they are now.

Since the only thing keeping us from playing PC to MAC multiplayer is getting the MAC version ported to the current PC version, and Aspyr is responsible for the MAC port, then it is Aspyr who SUCKS.

    You just got served.

  • http://www.tourtouras.info Thanos

The PC / Mac versions of Civ 5 are currently on par. It’s just the PC / Mac multiplayer that’s not supported for now, since there are numerous issues regarding the matter that need to be fixed first. Aspyr said a while ago that there are lots of crashes; if PC / Mac multiplayer DOES come out, people will start yelling that it’s crashing too often and that they should never have released the feature.

  • Mark

I bought Civ V last week and it constantly crashes (at least once every 20 turns or so). I’m running SL on latest version of Mac. 8GB or RAM, iMac so I know it’s not a memory issue. Any suggestions?? I’m really frustrated!

    • http://www.gameagent.com Russ Looney

@Mark: Have you been able to get in contact with our support team? Assuming your machine meets the minimum requirements, they should be able to help you determine what the problem is. You can reach them via email (support@aspyr.com) or on the web (http://support.aspyr.com).

  • nathan.murr

I’m sorry if this question was already discussed: The MAC version has only three languages available, while PC has five. Why so?

  • Mikel

Now we have the countdown to the next patch… Is it safe to assume that the new DLC that is coming out on Thursday will NOT be immediately available to Mac users until after the Mac patch to catch up with the PC version gets released?

  • Tim

    @Mikel
There are parts of the patch that are new, e.g. Atoll, which are probably in the game precisely ‘because’ of the upcoming DLC Polynesia, so I would also assume the DLC will not be available for Mac until the new patch has been ported.

  • Mikel

I know they are working on it, but the silence is maddening. :)

  • Socrates

Seriously, does anyone know when the new patch will be ported? I want to play as Polynesia…

  • Robert

They need to hurry the fuck up with making Polynesia available for Mac. Promoting that all DLC is available for Mac on Steam when all of it actually isn’t is very frustrating. On another note, my game ran so smooth when I first downloaded it on my Mac. I honestly had no complaints. Ever since they added this new patch, I’ve ran into a host of new bugs. Other than game freezes, its mostly aesthetic bugs than game effecting bugs. Still, its quite annoying.

i own a mac and my boyfriend owns a pc. i joined his game by clicking “join game” on steam and it connected me but then it said something about how our versions aren’t the same…that sucks cuz now i can’t dominate his world /: haha

  • Jungbaek

Hi, Jungbaek, the Korean DLC is not yet ready for the Mac.  The most recent Civ V Mac DLC release was Denmark and the Explorers Map Pack.  If you are unable to access either of those or any DLC from earlier, please contact our support team.  You can reach them on the web (http://support.aspyr.com) or via email (support@aspyr.com).
