The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut Has a Wine Deficiency

Posted by Jas Kao

First and foremost, we don’t mean that The Witcher has a shortage of alcohol.

Sorry, that was a bad joke. Just trying to draw attention away from the disappointment if not blatant outrage many of us felt after being so excited after hearing about CD Projekt porting this great fantasy RPG to Mac and then finding out we might have just wasted our money buying it because the game is pretty much unplayable due to their lackluster attempt at a port.

Basically, when you start up The Witcher it’ll work just fine for a few minutes if not more (it seems to vary with some people experiencing a crash after a few minutes to a few hours) then you’ll suddenly be faced with this unfortunate error screen.

Neither changing the graphical settings will not help in the matter because regardless of whether or not you are playing on the maximum settings or the minimum settings, the game still crashes with the same error message. Nor will updating Wine on your Mac help as it will still crash but it may take a bit longer before it does.

Our recommendation to you:  Don’t buy this game now. Wait till CD Projekt fixes this issue completely.

Check back in a few days or so because we’ll post an update if they fix this problem sometime in the near future. Also, it couldn’t hurt checking out the Steam Forums for The Witcher if they found a fix.

If you’ve got any questions or comments, leave them below and we’ll get back to you.

Upgrading the wrapper to Wineskin 1.5 (the game comes in 1.3 or something) got me past the crashes. Now I just have some black screen issues, but I can usually play for an hour before anything happens. Just save frequently.

Seems like with that fix there are varying outcomes. Some people can play for a couple hours then it’ll crash after the update while with others the crashes are still pretty frequent.

Thanks for the heads-up though! At least the game is semi-playable for you but don’t you get frustrated after only a hour of gameplay?

How do you do that??? Please help me, I’m trying to get this damn thing working.

I can’t even get past the first load screen. it lets me pick new game, keyboard settings, and difficulty, but then when it loads the first area it crashes. I am very disappointed because I was looking forward to this game and heard great things about it. now I am extremely pissed, it ruined my night, and I am considering never buying from them again because they just essentially stole my money. hopefully they fix this quickly though so my faith can be restored. but this is NOT a good first impression and this better be one hell of a good game.

You can try what Vrajak did and upgrade the wrapper to Wineskin 1.5. It seems to get him to be able to play for an hour or so before crashing.

Though that fix may or may not work because I’ve seen that fix posted on other forums with varying results. Still worth a shot.

The same thing happened to me, Bob. As soon as I pick my settings after starting a new game,

The same exact thing keeps happening to me, Bob. As soon as I start a new game, and choose my settings, it crashes right after the first loading screen. Ugh. Ten dollars, wasted. I could have bought like, three bags of chips instead of this.
